About Tasmania

South of mainland Australia is the sunny and temperate island of Tasmania – compact yet diverse with breathtaking mountain, forest and coastal scenery and, of course, the famous Tasmania Devil.

Hobart, the capital and Australia’s second oldest city, is in a beautiful waterfront location at the foot of Mount Wellington on the Derwent River. Its harbour at Sullivans Cove is usually busy with fishing boats, Antarctic explorers and pleasure craft, with regular sailing regattas.

Many of the former dockside warehouses here have been converted into fine restaurants, shops and galleries. Or climb Kelly’s Steps to Battery Point, where you’ll find 19th century cottages, Georgian mansions, antique shops and pubs along the winding streets.

At Port Arthur Historic Site on the nearby Tasman Peninsula you can learn about the life of early convict settlers. There are also exhilarating cliff and bush walks and amazing rock formations at the Devils Kitchen, Tasman Arch and Waterfalls Bay.

The east coast boasts some superb sandy white beaches, lapped by the turquoise waters of the Tasman Sea, with some of the best at Freycinet National Park.  At Launceston the spectacular Cataract Gorge has fine gardens, walking trails, a suspension bridge and chairlift. Or explore the tranquil Tamar Valley, stopping off at some of the fine wineries.

Around Cradle Mountain and the Lake St Clair National Park the scenery becomes more dramatic, with lakes, waterfalls and craggy mountain peaks. On Tasmania’s remote west coast, the town of Strahan stands as a gateway to the Gordon River. There are cruises to Sarah Island, a ruined penal colony, and Heritage Landing, where a boardwalk guides you through the native rainforest undamaged for thousands of years.
