At the southern end of the Northern Territory lies the Red Centre contianing some of the most spectacular and unique natural sights in the world.
Alice Springs is at the geographical centre of the continent, it's a compact, clean and modern town, rich in pioneer spirit and Aboriginal culture. Inhabited for at least 30,000 years by Aranda Aboriginals who moved between the spring here and several other watering holes in the MacDonnell Ranges.
At the top of everyone's list is mysterious Uluru - Ayers Rock as we know it - one of many sacred sites in this region of the Aboriginal people. Rising almost 350m out of the desert sand, it's the world's largest monolith.
To the west of Ayers Rock are the distinctive, huge red domes of the Kata Tjuta - 'many heads' - or the Olgas as they're also known. North in the Watarrka National Park is the Kings Canyon stretching for over a mile with a 300m drop to the valley floor, the views from the rim are spectacular. Look out for the Lost City and the lush Garden of Eden with its sparkling waterhole where you can swim and cool off.
