The capital of Victoria, quite fittingly, has a grand Victorian atmosphere, with its elegant architecture, tree-lined boulevards and its historic tram system which harks back to a bygone era (although it's wonderfully efficient).

It's a cultured and cosmopolitan city, with a number of galleries and a world-class theatre district. There's a thriving street café scene, superb restaurants and excellent shopping. Southbank is a lively riverside art and entertainment area you shouldn't miss.

You'll find plenty to do in Australia's second largest city. Explore the Botanic Gardens, see Captain Cook's cottage in Fitzroy Gardens, enjoy a cruise down the Yarra River, picnic in one of the beautiful parks or take the tram down to the beach. St Kilda is great fun, has a lovely beach and is only 15 minutes from the city centre.

Melbourne also hosts several major sporting events throughout the year, Grand Prix racing, horse racing, world tennis and the Aussie Rules Football final when it can be very busy and difficult to book accommodation - so reserve yours in good time.

Within reach of Melbourne are some special attractions that shouldn't be missed. The stunning coastal scenery of the Great Ocean Road and the penguin parade at Philip Island are unforgettable. There's the gold rush town of Ballarat and Puffing Billy in the Dandenong Hills or enjoy a glass of wine or two at the Yarra Valley vineyards.
