About the Top End

Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, is the largest city in the Northern Territory. Acting as the Top End’s regional centre, Darwin, is the smallest and most sparsely populated northerlyAustralian capital city.

Renamed in 1911, in honour of Charles Darwin, Darwin was originally a Larrakia Aboriginal state, and a  pioneering outpost. Previously known as the Pearl Harbour of Australia, the city has nearly been entirely rebuilt twice, once due to the Japanese air raids during World War II, and again after being devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974.
