Hobart, the capital and Australia's second oldest city, is in a beautiful waterfront location at the foot of Mount Wellington on the Derwent River. Its harbour at Sullivan Cove is usually busy with fishing boats, Antarctic explorers and pleasure craft, with regular sailing regattas. Many of the former dockside warehouses here have been converted into fine restaurants, shops and galleries.
At Port Arthur Historic Site on the nearby Tasman Peninsula you can experience the life of early convict settlers. There are also exhilarating cliff and bush walks and amazing rock formations at the Devils Kitchen, Tasman Arch and Waterfalls Bay.
