Adelaide and South Australia

Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate and food and drink to match. Surrounded by the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wine growing regions, South Australia’s first city sells itself as the culinary capital of Australia.

Adelaide is also the departure point for the Ghan and Indian Pacific Railways and the Murray River cruise, but to make the most of the city, stay awhile in one of our centrally located hotels and apartments.

About Adelaide and South Australia

South Australia’s capital is very much its cultural centre, with impressive Victorian buildings surrounded by delightful parkland and a well earned reputation for fine food and wine.

Victoria Square with its pretty fountain is at the centre of the city - a favourite place to meet and chat. Close by is Central Market, an Adelaide institution for over 100 years with hundreds of stalls selling European and Asian produce. Excellent shopping can also be found in the more modern Rundle Street Mall.

North Terrace is home to theatres, galleries, museums and government buildings. Behind it the Torrens River flows through lush green parkland, past the zoo and through the beautiful botanic gardens, which are home to the largest glasshouse in Australia. Nearby North Adelaide, with its elegant mansions and fine old cottages is only a 10 minute stroll from the city centre.

One trip you must make is to Glenelg, Adelaide’s favourite beach resort, with plenty of good restaurants and an amusement park. The 30 minute tram ride from Victoria Square to Glenelg is an experience in itself.

Further afield, the Adelaide Hills provide spectacular views over the city and some great walking trails. Further west is the great Murray River, which rises in the Australian Alps and passes through fertile plains and wooded gorges on its way to the sea. A cruise on the Murray Princess paddle steamer is a great way to see it.

South Australia produces over half the country’s wines and some of the best come from vineyards in the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. Many of these excellent wines can be enjoyed at the wineries that produce them.

South of Adelaide lie the uncrowded beaches and historic towns of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Smuggling and whaling used to be the main industries here! Further along the coast, the mighty Murray River enters the Southern Ocean, and the nearby Coorong National Park brims with vast numbers of wild birds.
