The capital of South Australia and very much its cultural centre, Adelaide is a city you won't forget. It has a rich heritage and a legacy of elegant Victorian architecture, now punctuated with fine modern buildings to make an impressive skyline.

Victoria Square with its pretty fountain is at the centre of the city - a favourite place to meet and chat. Close by is Central Market, an Adelaide institution for over 100 years with hundreds of stalls selling European and Asian produce. Excellent shopping can also be found in more modern Rundle Street Mall.

North Terrace is home to theatres, galleries, museums and government buildings. Behind it the Torrens River flows through green parkland, past the zoo and botanic gardens, with the largest glasshouse in Australia. Nearby North Adelaide, with its elegant mansions and fine old cottages, is a 10 minute stroll from the city centre.

One trip you must make is to Glenelg, Adelaide's favourite beach resort, with plenty of good restaurants and an amusement park. The 30 minute tram ride from Victoria Square to Glenelg is an experience in itself.
